Conservation and Research
In fulfilling Sunset Zoo's mission, "to inspire conservation of the natural world," the Conservation and Research department is actively involved in a variety of international projects. Partnerships with Paraguay, species population management, chimpanzee research and global education are all highlights of this department. Please explore the links below to learn more about these developing initiatives.

Paraguay Conservation Action Partnership
The Paraguay Conservation Action Partnership was organized in 1994 and has been continuously headquartered at Sunset Zoo since its formation.  Sunset Zoo is the smallest Zoo in the United States to administer an international conservation program.
Sunset Zoo participates in the management of a variety of Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) programs including: Species Survival Plans, Taxon Advisory Groups and Population Management Groups.

Paraguayan Zoo Projects
Since 1994, Sunset Zoo, in collaboration with CAP Paraguay, has partnered with Paraguay's Asunción Zoo on renovation and rejuvenation projects, bringing about some remarkable transformations for the South American facility.  In 2004, the CAP Paraguay joined forces with the Paraguay and Brazil governments to assist in the design and development of a projected new Biopark, Ju'i Rupa.
Sunset Zoo has participated in collaborative research projects since 1991, including chimpanzee behavorial research and doctoral projects through Kansas State University.
