What is a Reptile?
Reptiles are an ancient group of animals, in fact, many species have not evolved much since prehistoric times. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals and can be found on all continents except for Antarctica; preferring tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Their scaly skin prevents them from drying out in these hot, dry climates. Photos courtesy of Joel Sartore.
Inspiring Conservation
The top six threats to wildlife are:
poaching illegal pet trade habitat destruction
pollution population growth traveling/fashion
Learn how these issues are affecting reptiles:
A major issue affecting animal species around the world, especially reptiles, is the poaching of these animals for their by products, specifically in the souvenir industry. Whether it is a crocodile skin purse or snake skin boots, species are becoming endangered needlessly. Next time you travel, think about your gifts and avoid any items that may be a result of illegal poaching.
Did You Know?
To remain active, reptiles must maintain a body temperature of 77 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit (25-37 Celsius). If that is not possible, they will usually retreat to a location where body temperatures are likely to remain within that level range. If the temperatures are too cold, reptiles may die. |
